Sept - Oct

Studio Extension.

As you will probably know, the foyer wall is now down and it is proposed
that we all have an opportunity to decide how the extra space is to be
used. So, if you do have any ideas, please pass them to any committee
members or the session leader. This way we will be able to make the best
use of the new space. Eric has negotiated well with the owners and you
will be relieved to hear that we have more space at very little extra
expense, so there will not be any increase in fees !

Liver artists have work there including David Brown, Phil Dowling, Peter

others, so give yourself a treat and get along there. STOP PRESS! Phil
Dowling was awarded thr President’s Prize for his painting entitled
Sefton Park 08! Well done Phil and congratulations!

Have you found any websites that you think other members ought to know
about? Or books in the library? Would you like to contribute a review of
a book, film or whatever? If you do, send it to me, Dennis Spicer at

It looks like being a good year at Tate Liverpool, with a series of
interesting exhibitions coming up. First off in October there is an
exhibition of the work of Jean Tinguely whose speciality was
constructing absurd and pointless machines. His most famous was the “
Homage to New York”, a gigantic machine that came to life for twenty odd
minutes before it destroyed itself by bashing itself to bits before
eventually catching fire.
At the same time the Mark Rothko Seagram murals will be displayed in the
ground floor gallery, a real treat for us Rothko fans. The bockbuster
show of next summer will be the Picasso: Peace and Freedom Show from 21
May. This highlights his political work from the end of the Second World
War and throughout the Cold War. This should be unmissable .

This month we welcome our cookery correspondent Rose Madder for the
first in an occasional series of recipes:

Recipe: Tomato Sauce that is better than Lloyd Grossman’s.
Ingredients: 2 tins chopped tomatoes (buy good ones; cheap ones are
bulked out with tomato juice.)
1 peeled onion, 1 clove garlic, good glug olive oil, 2 teaspoons sugar,
pinch of salt, bay leaf mixed herbs.

Method: Pour the tins of tomatoes into a saucepan, cut the onion in half
and bury both halves in the tomatoes, sink the garlic clove in, pour in
a generous glug of olive oil, stir in sugar, salt and all herbs . Bring
to the boil and turn down to a simmer. Keep simmering until it has
thickened, about 45 minutes. The idea is to evaporate the water leaving
a thick sauce that is flavoured by the cooked onion and garlic. When you
have achieved this, take out the onion, garlic and bay leaf, they have
done their job. Serve on pasta. This is the basic sauce. To this can be
added tinned tuna and capers, or chorizo sausage and olives or melted
gorgonzola cheese. Usually serves 3 to 4 people, depending on how greedy
you are. Keeps well in the fridge .
